There's nothing like the convenience and flexibility of hiring your own private plane when you have to travel. That's what makes a private airplane charter so much more attractive than flying commercial. For many people, the prestige of using a private plane is secondary to the time they save since there's no wading through long lines at the airport and you don't have to worry about layovers and other delays.

If you've never chartered your own private plane before, here are some tips that can make the process (and your trip) go more smoothly:

1. You set the schedule.

A private airplane charter lets you set the schedule. You can make changes to your plans as necessary as long as you let the pilot know well enough in advance so that he or she can lay in the proper flight plan with the authorities. 

Generally speaking, you won't experience any kind of layover unless there's a need to refuel. If that's necessary, the pilot should let you know where you will be stopping and how long of a delay it will cause in your trip. 

2. You have more options for landing.

Because private planes are smaller than commercial jets, there are more airstrips available for them to land. This means that you aren't hemmed into using the large commercial airports that come to mind if they aren't convenient for your destination.

Let your pilot know your final destination. The odds are high that he or she can find an airstrip closer to your goal than you expect.

3. You need to book in advance.

Unless you can afford to keep a private plane crew waiting to go at all times, scheduling your trip in advance is a must. That way, the operator can help you select the size of the plane that you want to charter and verify the availability of the crew.

Generally speaking, the larger the number of guests you're bringing along and the more luggage you need to bring, the bigger the jet you need to charter. The smaller the plane, the less it will cost you for the trip.

4. Ask about the amenities you can expect.

Even small jets usually have a galley of some sort so that you can get food service on your trip. Many jets also come with other amenities like in-flight entertainment, drinks and other niceties that can make your travel experience complete.
