Well water is untreated and unregulated, in comparison to water that is supplied through a municipality. Discoloration of water, staining of sinks, tubs, and toilets, and an offensive odor that is persistent when water is running are three signs that a water test and treatment process need to be performed.

Some Common Elements And Water Testing

Iron is a chemical element that is naturally found in the earth's crust. Yellow, brown, and red stains, a metallic scent and taste, and stained fabrics are indicative of a high iron content. Manganese is another element that is commonly found in well water. It is most noted for its tendency to leave dark stains on fabrics that have been laundered with water that contains a high manganese content.

Hydrogen sulfide will emit a pungent odor that is similar to the scent of rotten eggs. It can be found in well water or can be triggered by the interaction between sulfates and the magnesium rod that is located within a water heater. Water testing consists of collecting a sample of the water and using a strip or tablet to perform an analysis. With the high concentration of any or all of these elements, a water softener and filter may be necessary.

Extreme Cases And Treatment Products

If water that contains high levels of some elements has been an issue for some time, staining within plumbing or appliances may be present. Plumbing fixtures and pipes that contain high levels of iron or manganese should be replaced. There are products on the market that can be used to remove staining from areas where fresh water will be utilized. These, however, are a temporary solution to the problem and offensive odors and future staining will be encountered.

A plumber or a water treatment contractor can guide you in choosing a softener and filtration system that will adequately remedy the water problems that you have been encountering. If a water problem isn't severe, flushing out the plumbing may be necessary, to reduce traces of the elements and to eliminate the unpleasant scent that you have been experiencing.

After using a water softener and filtration system, fresh water can be drunk or used for cleaning and bathing purposes. You may notice an improvement in your skin's texture and spotting on glassware, dishes, and clothing will not occur. A water softener and a filtration system will require occasional maintenance. Both treatment products contain a filter that will trap sediment and will need to be replaced every few months.
